Peter Pan at the Barn Theatre Review

This is one that my theatre friends would not stop going on about on Twitter. While I was watching The Prom, they were off to Neverland. And now I've only just managed to persuade Tinkerbell to lend me some pixie dust so I can join them...

This afternoon, I was taken to the Barn Theatre for their production of the classic Peter Pan

Rather than a full out cast as you would expect, this is in fact a one-man show; Waylon Jacobs leads here as a father talking to his daughter over Zoom (we assume). To get her to go to sleep, he tells her her favourite story: Peter Pan.

We all know of at least one version, whether that be Disney, Hook, the really underrated one with Jason Issacs in it; but this is the first I have seen in a long time that really provokes a sense of child-like wonder. The audience is in the daughter's shoes, with a lot being left to our imagination. Just like the best of bedtime stories.

Jacobs does a different voice for every character: teddies are stand ins for John and Michael, and a lightbulb for Tink; Joe Price's virtual backgrounds are simple sketches like those you would find in the illustrations of a children's book. But they work to great affect.

If you want an alternative family show to watch, this is a good choice. It's only an hour long straight through, so doesn't take much out of a busy Christmas-prepping day - and isn't Christmas the best time to remember that there is a child in all of us? Even as we grow up (unless you're Pan himself).
