Magic of Animation in Concert Unplugged Review

This week has been like buses in terms of stagey material - none for a while and then loads at once...!

After Godspell the day before, I have been indulging in a two of my obsessions at once: theatre and animation!

Rob Houchen (Eugenius), the mastermind at West End Does has given us The Magic of Animation Unplugged, an acoustic online version of one of their West End Does concerts, held in support of the Theatre Arts Fund. It was a no-brainer for me; I've always wanted to go to one of these gigs but was never able to as they were usually held in London on a Sunday night....

I will keep this brief, mainly as it is a fairly brief concert, only an hour long but they packed in plenty of different animation tunes, not just the ones you would expect. Yes there was Disney, but also Dreamworks films, An American Tail and more that you wouldn't at first expect.

There wasn't a single BAD performance but my personal favourites are:

  • Jamie Muscato (Heathers) performing Proud of Your Boy from Aladdin
  • Bradley Jaden (Les Mis) performing Out There from The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Scott Paige (The Addams Family) performing The Little Mermaid's Poor Unfortunate Souls (the only villain song of the night)
  • Rachel John and Hiba Elchike performing When You Believe from The Prince of Egypt
  • Vanessa Williams (City of Angels) singing Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas, the song she famously covered in the past
  • And finally Stagebox Musical Theatre performing a Frozen 2 medley
But there is of course a lot more than that!

The concert is also streaming on Saturday, so if you fancy a chilled hour or so with a glass of something alcoholic and some of the best voices of the West End, then this is well worth it.
