Remember Me
Source: Coco (2017) (imdb.com) |
Showing in cinemas now, Coco is the story of Miguel, a young boy living in Mexico who aspires to be a musician, like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. The only problem is that his family is DEAD AGAINST music due to a family "curse".
On Dia De Los Muertos (or Day of the Dead), he ends up in the Land of the Dead and has to find his way home, learning the importance of your family along the way.
As excepted from Pixar, the animation is stunning, with the Land of the Dead showing an explosion of colour, and the skeleton's movements are incredibly attractive - oh and it is guaranteed to make you cry (or in my case, nearly cry - you'll feel emotional in one way or another). But I decided to do a review of this, as there is so much music.
Michael Giacchino returns to score the film, and the songs are written by Germaine Franco and Adrian Molina. The three together really show off the richness of Mexican music, in just one of the ways the film pays respect to Mexican culture: mixing mariachi, salsa, flamenco, pop and more.
The big song, Remember Me, is a bit of an exception however, as it is written by the husband and wife team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen) - and the song already has an Oscar nomination. I'm not expecting it to win, as the favourite is The Greatest Showman's This Is Me, however, the film is the favourite to win Best Animated Film - and it better had win compared to the likes of The Boss Baby! Good grief that category sucks!
Anyway, I digress - go see Coco! Like now!
